Mickey Hart Band
Wingfield Park, Reno, NV

The Mickey Hart Band performed a free concert sponsored by Reno’s annual Artown festival. It was a beautiful venue right on the Truckee River. This is the first time I’d seen Mickey since the 1999-2000 New Year’s Eve show with Ratdog at the Warfield.

The park was packed with Deadheads, locals coming out for a good show, and a handful of world music fans. The show was about half his material and half Dead tunes and the crowd was about evenly split in their appreciation (or dislike) of a given song depending on which side it fell. It was mainly a seated show but that didn’t stop the Deadheads from moving up front and dancing during the Dead material and then sitting down and talking loudly through the percussion pieces. Conversely many people left when they realized it wasn’t going to be a percussion-only concert. The couple sitting next to me who drove out from Utah to see the show and the drum circle before told me at set break how annoying the Dead songs were and thought that last song (Scarlet -> Fire) “would never, ever end.” The Other One finally sent them packing. Me, I thought the mixture worked out quite well.

Mickey Hart
Idlewild Park, Reno, NV

Before his show later that night at Wingfield Park, Mickey Hart organized a drum circle on a small island in Idlewild Park on the Truckee River. He played for about an hour but the circle kept going for at least another 30 minutes at which time I left to go get space for the evening show.
